Benefits Of Catfish Peppersoup

Catfish pepper soup is delicious and flavorful. Asides this, it also has a variety of health benefits to the human body.

Catfish pepper soup is rich in proteins, healthy fats and fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, and energy.

It is also a low-calorie meal. One bowl of catfish pepper soup has 258 calories with 13g of fat, 8g of carbs, and 21g of protein.

Catfish is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids which play a part in the eye, heart and cognitive health. omega-3 fatty acids are also essential for the development of the child, so catfish pepper soup is an excellent suggestion to add in an expecting mother’s diet.

The proteins found in catfish pepper soup will give you all the amino acids your body needs, build lean muscle mass and boost your immunity.

Catfish pepper soup is also a good source of vitamin B-12 which helps in the breakdown of food into energy and improve nerve function. One serving of this dish will give you 40% of the recommended daily intake of vitamin B-12.

  • Fresh catfish (1.2kg)
  • Onions (1 medium chopped)
  • Groundpepper (1 tbsp)
  • Cameroon pepper (2 tsps) optional
  • Seasoning cubes (2)
  • Chopped basil or scent leaves (1/2 cup chopped)
  • Ground crayfish (1 tbsp)
  • Tomato puree (1 tbsp) optional
  • Scotch bonnet (2 sliced)
  • Nigerian pepper soup spice mix (1 tbsp)
  • Salt to taste
  • Lemons/limes to wash the fish (2)


Get all your ingredients together.

Step 1

Wash, clean and gut fish with lime/lemon juice to get rid of the sliminess. Cut in 4 pieces. Sprinkle with some salt to season and set aside.

Step 2

Place a pot on medium heat, add about 1 litre of water, pepper soup spice mix, ground pepper, crayfish, Cameroon pepper, seasoning, onions, tomato puree, and bring to boil, this should be around 5 minutes.

Add catfish pieces to the sauce and cook for 10 minutes. Check for salt and seasoning.

Step 3

Add and chopped scent leaves and cook for another 5 minutes. Do not overcook the fish and stir gently to avoid breaking the fish.

Step 4

Serve hot or warm and enjoy.
