5 Simple Ways To Maintain Your Mental Fitness
October 9, 2020

Exercises are good for your body, so everyone says. It helps you lose weight, maintain fitness, promote mental wellness, reduces the risk of diabetes and heart diseases. What a lot of people will not tell you is that there are times when exercising can be bad for your health. This is partly because a lot of us have workout habits that are detrimental to our health.

Exercises should promote general well-being. You shouldn’t have a hard time sleeping, lose appetite, feel pain, dizziness, or sick after exercising. If you experience any of these signs, then you should reassess your workout routines and habits as they are doing more harm than good. Here are the ways that exercise could be hurting your health.

1. When you are in a considerable amount of pain.

You can probably hear a fitness instructor yell, “push through the pain” when exercising, and it sounds like a powerful motivator to finish your rounds. However, exercising through pain is one of those workout habits that can quickly turn into a disaster before they yield any benefits. If any part of your body is in pain, stop whatever exercise you were doing and avoid irritating it some more.

Pain is your body’s way of telling you that you have reached your limit, and anything farther will likely injure you. It is your responsibility to pay attention to your body and make adjustments.

2. When you feel dizzy or weak for long periods.

It is normal to experience some dizziness or weakness from a workout, especially during position changes. This dizziness, similar to feeling light-headed from standing too fast, is due to the body trying to readjust to pressure changes caused by sudden movements. However, persistent dizziness or weakness long after your exercises is not a good sign. It may be a good idea to visit a doctor to find the underlying cause of such dizziness.

On the other hand, bad eating habits can also be responsible for dizziness. When you frequently exercise on an empty stomach, you might feel weak and dizzy after.

3. When you feel sick all the time

Regular exercises can boost your immunity, but over-training, on the other hand, can weaken your immune system. Over-training can make you more susceptible to illnesses. When you feel sick all the time, it may be a sign that you are exercising too much and not getting enough rest days in between.

4. When you have trouble sleeping

Exercising too much can cause insomnia. That’s because it causes the sympathetic nervous system to remain overactive, putting your body into overdrive. Since the sympathetic nervous system is connected to the body’s fight or flight response, over-stimulation can cause restlessness and insomnia. Anaerobic exercises like sprinting and heavy resistance training, like weight lifting, can trigger an overactive sympathetic nervous system.

To avoid this, cut back on the frequency and intensity of your exercises or exercise earlier in the day. Also, include meditation and yoga to your routines.

5. When you continuously feel sore.

Each time your exercise, there are small micro-tears in your muscles that cause soreness. These micro-tears are then built over, leading to muscle growth. However, after each tearing, you should give your body enough time to heal and rebuild. Without this, the constant tearing of the muscles will lead to a state of continuous wear and soreness.

Exercises should generally not have a bad outcome on your health, but terrible workout habits can bring you a world of pain and discomfort. The key to getting the most from your exercises is in doing things in moderation and adequate rest.
