How to begin your fitness journey

People worldwide are becoming more fitness conscious, meaning trips to the gym, and healthy wholesome foods are all the rave now. However, many people, no matter how tempted they are to hop on the train, never seem to be able to make that transition. The hardest part about undergoing a fitness journey has to be biting the bullet and making the first move. The benefits of living a healthy and fit lifestyle far outweigh whatever challenges that you may face on your fitness journey.

Here are some tips to help you remain consistent and dedicated to your fitness journey.

1. Don’t negotiate

“I just want to sleep today. I will do extra laps tomorrow to make up for it.” “I think I have a headache. Maybe I should skip today’s exercise to rest.” That’s how you negotiate your way out of exercising. All that time and energy spent arguing with yourself on whether or not to exercise could have been channeled into a quick 30 minutes session, and you would have forgotten about it. Not to mention the guilt that comes with failing to follow through with your fitness plans.

Whatever you do, do NOT negotiate. Create a fitness schedule and stick to it, no matter what. This commitment will make the most difference in your fitness journey.

2. Move forward

It is too much to expect that you will get it right the first time. You will make mistakes, fall off the wagon, cheat on your diet and exercise, and take breaks. It is inevitable. The most important thing is that you do not dwell too much on these mistakes and move forward with your fitness goals.

Don’t think about the progress that you have lost or gained. Don’t judge yourself too harshly. That you fell off the wagon does not mean you have to quit your fitness journey altogether. Make a plan to move forward and commit to it.

3. Have a fitness goal

You know what they say, “failure to plan is planning to fail.” Before you begin any fitness journey, you need to have clear, achievable goals in sight and make action plans to help you reach those goals. A clear purpose makes it easier to know what steps you need to achieve it. Do you need to work out more? What exercises would you be doing? Would you have to be on a specific diet? What days would be your rest/cheat day? This structure helps to keep sight of what’s important and remain motivated.

4. Invest

If you are serious about fitness, you must realize that you cannot hack your way through it. You have to invest something. If it is not your money, it has to be your time or energy. When you have something to lose, you get extra motivation to keep at it till you see results.

5. Try something new

So many different types of exercises and diets exist. What works for someone else might not work for you. Do not be afraid to experiment until you find one that suits you better. You should also be able to enjoy your fitness journey for you to see results. After all, you can only be consistent with the things that you enjoy doing. So if you prefer outdoor activities like hiking, marathons, or rock climbing over gym exercises, go for it.

With these tips, it should be easy to build consistency and commitment to your fitness progress. Remember, the first step is usually the hardest but once you make a decision to begin and don’t look back, the only way to go from there is forward.
