It’s quite surprising how people don’t take thyroid-related conditions seriously. Yet, it’s a dangerous disease that could cause heart disease, heart failure, and sometimes mental health issues. If you are experiencing any early symptoms of thyroid disease, take note of these foods that are bad for thyroid problems;

#1. Foods that Contain Soy

Any food containing soy like edamame, tofu, and miso is a no go area for anybody struggling with a thyroid condition. 

According to experts, soy contains a compound- isoflavones. And this compound could have adverse effects on a thyroid condition. When you consume excess isoflavones, you may be vulnerable to hypothyroidism. 

However, a recent report revealed that soy doesn’t affect thyroid hormones. But it mildly raises the level of thyroid-stimulating hormones. 

For now, there are no specific dietary guidelines. However, there are indications that taking food that contains soy may interfere with your thyroid’s medication. 

So, wait for a few hours after eating soy before taking your medication. Or better still, you can discuss with your physician to advise you accordingly. 

#2. Broccoli, Cauliflower, and Other Cruciferous Vegetables  

Cruciferous vegetables are amongst the foods that are bad for thyroid conditions. Of course, these vegetables are very rich in fibers and other essential nutrients. 

However, the veggies may affect the body’s production of thyroid hormones, especially if you have an iodine deficiency. 

So, as tempting as it may be, limit the consumption of Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, turnips, kale, bok choy, etc. if you have any thyroid condition. 

According to available studies, cruciferous veggies may block the thyroid’s ability to utilize iodine. And when that happens, it will obstruct the thyroid’s normal function, which will have dire consequences on your health. 

But Mayo Clinic opined that for any cruciferous veggie to have a great impact on your iodine uptake, you must have consumed much. 

So, you can still eat cruciferous veggies even if you have hypothyroidism. But you will have to prepare them differently. For instance, when you reduce your intake of these vegetables to 5 ounces a day, they won’t have much effect on your thyroid gland. 

#3. Gluten Find in Bread, Rice, and Pasta

Gluten is a protein you find in processed foods from wheat, barley, rye, and several other grains. It’s one of the foods that are bad for thyroid conditions. So, if you have hyperthyroidism, you should limit your intake of gluten. 

Additionally, if you have celiac disease, you should also limit your intake of gluten. If you have this disease, gluten tends to irritate your small intestine when you take it. And this could affect the absorption of thyroid hormone replacement medication. 

Again, experts suggested that hyperthyroidism and celiac disease always go together. But that doesn’t imply that a diet without gluten could treat thyroid diseases. 

#4. Fatty Foods Like Butter, Meat, And Anything Fried 

Some experts opined that fats can disrupt your body’s ability to absorb thyroids replacement medication. It can also affect the thyroid gland’s ability to produce enough hormones. So, it’s one of the foods that are bad for thyroid conditions. 

And if you are experiencing any of the early hyperthyroidism symptoms, limit your intake of fats from butter, mayonnaise, margarine, and meats containing fats. 

#5. Sugary Food 

If you know the level of havoc sugar wreaks on your body as an adult, you won’t take it anymore. Trust me, it does more damage than good for adults. 

Generally, hyperthyroidism could slow down your body’s metabolism. When this happens, you are prone to gaining excess weight. And this is really bad for your body system. 

So, as a thyroid patient, try to limit or eliminate sugar from your diet. It will go a long way to help you. 

These are some of the foods that are bad for thyroid conditions. Take note of them and if possible, eliminate them from your diet.
