We all know someone that has tried to eat a clean diet but keeps falling back to foods they should resist. Heck, we’ve all been that person at one time. Pizza is a go-to fast food choice for a lot of people. You can have pizza occasionally, just as long as you don’t order deep-dish pizza with a thick crust, extra cheeses, and a medley of meat. Instead, go for thin-crust pizza with lots of vegetables. Or just have a salad!

These treats are bad for you because you cannot limit yourself to just one pack. The more packs you eat, the more calories, carbs, fat, and salt you consume. If you need a healthier snack option, try nuts or popcorn. Popcorn is rich in fibre and low in calories – as long as you watch the butter. Nuts will keep you full and satisfied, but you have to watch out for the portion size.
Pasta is ridiculously high in carbs, and you should watch how you eat it. A healthier substitute for flour-based pasta is spaghetti squash. You cut down carbs and calories to half with this substitute.
A lot of the cereals you consume are loaded with carbs and sugar. You are better of eating oatmeal as a substitute. Oatmeal is rich in fibre that keeps you full and slows down the absorption of calories into your body.
Deep down, you know you shouldn’t be consuming chocolates, but you can’t help it. A regular chocolate bar is full of unhealthy fats, sugar, and preservatives. If you have to consume chocolate, go for dark chocolate instead. Dark chocolate improves blood flow to the body, lowers blood pressure, and protects your cells from damage.
Another street food that you cannot resist eating, even though you should, are French fries or chips. If you would have them, skip the deep-frying and bake them instead. A small serving of fries has 230 calories, but a whole medium-sized baked potato has only 130-140 calories. Also, be careful of the dips you use for your baked chips as they can add more fat and calories to your meal.
You may think that ketchup is safe to eat because they are made from tomatoes and tomatoes are healthy. But you’re wrong. Ketchup also contains a ridiculous amount of sugar. Every tablespoon of ketchup has 4 grams of sugar. Instead, substitute your ketchup for a homemade tomato salsa dip.
White bread is bad for you because it contains too little fibre to slow down the release of calories into your bloodstream. So you would have to gobble a lot before you feel full. Substitute white bread for whole grain or whole wheat bread.
Smoothies are made from fruits, ergo healthy, right? Wrong! When you eat your fruits this way, it is easy to eat too much too quickly. Don’t forget that some fruits have a fair amount of sugar and carb content, and these can add up quickly. You can have smoothies as an occasional treat, but you’re better off eating your fruits whole.
We can agree that ice cream is delicious, and every spoonful is a delight. But every spoonful is also packed with a lot of calories, sugar, and fat. A better option would be a sorbet or fat-free frozen yogurt. You can even try unsweetened yogurt with nuts and berries to get proteins, calcium, and fibre along with that delicious goodness.
White rice breaks down into sugar, and the body quickly absorbs all the calories, preventing you from feeling full. If you have to eat rice, you first have to pick the right type. Basmati rice has a lower glycemic index, which means it will break down into sugar more slowly. You also have to make sure you don’t overcook the rice. Resistant starches that are good for your gut and slow digestion form as the rice cools down. If you don’t want to do all of this work, you can just substitute brown rice for white rice.
